David Haywood
Christchurch writer David Haywood began a university degree in 19th century literature, and ended up graduating with a Ph.D. in engineering.
In between, he found employment as a forklift driver, guitarist/songwriter, road-works lollipop man, computer programmer, librarian, university lecturer, and research scientist. His scientific work resulted in patents for cryocooler systems and ocean wave energy technology.
David writes the Southerly column on PublicAddress.net, and recently published ‘My First Stabbing’, a collection of essays that encompasses such apparently unrelated subjects as the urination habits of Germans, the fatness of policemen in Boston, humble woodcutter’s sons who marry women with big hair, and babies with projectile defecation.
“Apposite, biting and very funny.”
– Keri Hulme, Booker Prize-winning author of ‘The Bone People’
“Hugely enjoyable… terribly, terribly funny.”
– Kim Hill, Radio New Zealand.
“One of the best new writers to come on the scene for quite a while.”
– Denis Welch, (former) Deputy-editor New Zealand Listener
“Pure gold.”
– Jolisa Gracewood, New Zealand Reviewer of the Year 2006

Peta Mathias “Can we help it if we’re fabulous?”
Can we help it if we’re fabulous?
Published by A PENGUIN ORIGINAL, 2008
The irrepressible Peta Mathias is a woman who has never been afraid to embrace life with all its glorious inconsistencies, joys and heartbreaks. While we know her as an engaging television presenter, an inspiring food writer and a delightful raconteur, in ‘Can We Help It If We’re Fabulous?’ Peta instantly becomes every woman’s confidante, as she shares with us the wisdom she has learnt over her years of living outrageously. She is a woman who appreciates the importance of a gorgeous pair of shoes and the perfect shade of lipstick. She knows the value of good friends, great music, lively conversation, beautiful surroundings and a one-way ticket to an exotic destination. And having loved and lost – more than once – Peta also has her own theories on why relationships begin and end. And then there’s the sex chapter! Inspirational, razor-witted and irresistibly funny, ‘Can We Help It If We’re Fabulous?’ is Peta Mathias at her wisest – and naughtiest. This book is for each and every fabulous woman out there.
Jo Crompton
Jo Crompton is a local Christchurch artist who enjoys creating things in a range of media. She is especially interested in the way colours can evoke feelings and memories of places and events. Jo’s work with copper foiled stained glass is a playful attempt to capture the effect of the sun bouncing off ocean waves, flowers waving in the wind, and leaves fluttering in the breeze!
She is also interested in making use of materials that are left over from other purposes, and recycling where possible. With that in mind a large proportion of the glass used is off cuts from a lead lighting workshop, and the copper wire is from a scrap metal merchant. Some of her copper foil work can be seen at her webshop www.wishingtree.felt.co.nz
Jo also works with sterling silver making pieces of jewelry, and paints when she gets the chance. Her final ‘hat’ is that of graphic designer with 10 years experience producing catalogues, fliers, business cards, and illustrating for t-shirts and children’s’ counting games.
Some of her work can be seen at www.fizzyorangedesign.co.nz
Thanks for your support Jo!
